Wig Materials

What are the key differences between synthetic and human hair wigs?

Human hair wigs win on versatility and longevity, but synthetic wigs hold their style longer out of the box and cost significantly less for buyers who don't need heat styling.

The core tradeoff is between customization and convenience. Human hair wigs can be colored, heat-styled, and worn daily for one to three years with proper care. Synthetic wigs hold a factory-set style through washing but can't typically tolerate flat irons or curling wands, and most last three to six months under regular wear. For medical hair loss, human hair is often preferred because the look and feel more closely match natural hair.

  • Human hair wigs typically last 12–36 months; synthetic wigs average 3–6 months of regular wear.
  • Most synthetic wig fibers can't withstand heat above 250–350°F without damage, depending on fiber grade.
  • Synthetic wigs retain their styled shape after washing; human hair wigs require restyling each time.
  • Heat-resistant synthetic fiber wigs tolerate limited styling up to around 300–350°F, a step below human hair capability.
